Doreen H. Barkowitz, M.S.W., L.S.W.
Training Coordinator

Doreen Barkowitz joined the Youth and Family Training Institute in March 2011 as the Training Coordinator. Doreen has been involved in improving the lives of children, adolescents and young adults, and their families in many capacities during her career. She has trained professionals who work with youth with behavioral health and substance abuse issues, and those working with youth on the autism spectrum.

As the training coordinator, Doreen monitors the HFW training to ensure that the HFW principles, phases and activities are taught in a consistent manner and with fidelity to the HFW model. Outside of the skills the workforce require in their roles, Doreen emphasizes the importance of the general skills and knowledge needed to work with youth with behavioral health needs and their families. All families deserve a knowledgeable and well-trained team. Doreen wants to help families receive the same enhanced quality of care within the HFW model if it is offered in their county, regardless of where they live in PA. Training to maintain fidelity to the High Fidelity Wraparound model can ensure that there is communication between the youth, family, their natural supports, and providers, if they are part of the team. Fidelity to the process also means that the true needs of the youth and family are identified and met. Doreen will work on increasing the number of HFW trainers so that the HFW workforce can expand in a timely manner. This will ensure that more families have the opportunity to be a part of HFW.

Doreen has served as a parent support, and values the role that the Youth and Family Support Partners offer as a part of Pennsylvania’s HFW workforce. The feelings and expressed needs of the youth and family have always been important and included in the work Doreen has done as a therapist and program director because of her own experience raising a child with Autism and behavioral health issues. Doreen has always known that a large part of the recovery process involves the family system.

Doreen believes that High Fidelity Wraparound creates an opportunity for parents, guardians and youth to direct their course of action. This responsibility and the achievement of goals helps build the confidence and self-efficacy to progress in the best, and worst of times.
