Deputy Secretary Launches Mental Health Matters Initiative

In conjunction with activities to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month in May, the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services formally announced its “Mental Health Matters” initiative. There are three main focus areas: additional mental health first aid training especially focused on children’s mental health first aid; resources and training for families as first responders; and reducing suicides among veterans. OMHSAS also announced one-time grants to counties in amounts of approximately $5,000 to $10,000 per county. Counties will receive allocations and letters describing the intended use of these funds in the near future. They will be required to submit brief descriptions of their initiatives, and the funds can be used for existing initiatives or new ones. News release
